Indigenous Leaders Convene at Men's Training Workshop to Combat Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains alarmingly prevalent in indigenous villages and communities, posing a grave threat to the well-being of individuals within these societies. In a landmark event aimed at fostering dialogue, understanding, and proactive solutions, ten Indigenous leaders gathered in St. Cuthbert’s Village from October 30 to November 3, 2023, for a Men’s Training Workshop focused on addressing and ending gender-based violence in their respective villages and communities.

Hosted by National Toshaos’ Council (NTC), through the project “Empowering Men to be Agents of Change to Fight Violence against Women and Girls, the workshop provided a crucial platform for these influential leaders to engage in interactive sessions, discussions, and skill-building activities, all geared towards creating a collective commitment to combating gender-based violence. Leaders within indigenous villages and communities often find themselves unequipped with the necessary skills and resources to effectively address and combat GBV.  The event underscored the importance and the urgent need for a platform, involving men in the conversation, recognizing their pivotal role in transforming societal norms and fostering a culture of respect and equality.

Throughout the five-day workshop, a supportive environment was created where participants engaged in meaningful dialogue about the unique challenges they face, such as cultural barriers and limited access to resources within their village and communities.

They were then engaged in a series of thought-provoking sessions, facilitated by experts in the field, where they explored the root causes of gender-based violence, examined traditional gender roles, and developed strategies to promote positive change within their villages and communities. The program emphasized the significance of allyship, advocacy, and community engagement in the fight against gender-based violence.

The NTC is committed to fostering lasting change by empowering leaders within indigenous villages and communities. By addressing the complexities of gender-based violence through education, dialogue, and collaboration, the organization aims to contribute to the creation of safer and more equitable environments for everyone.

“We believe that involving men in conversations about gender-based violence is crucial for creating lasting change. This workshop provided a unique opportunity for indigenous leaders to come together, share their experiences, and develop strategies to address and ultimately end gender-based violence in their communities. By working collaboratively, we can build a future where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.” ~ Shane Cornelius, Secretary-NTC.

The workshop’s success is a testament to the dedication of the participants and the ongoing commitment of National Toshaos’ Council to fostering positive change within indigenous villages and communities. The impact of this initiative is expected to resonate far beyond the workshop, influencing community dynamics and contributing to the broader movement for gender equality.
