The Amerindian Act No. 6 of 2006, which is the principal legislation that governs the Indigenous Peoples of Guyana established the National Toshaos Council.
Indigenous Peoples in Guyana make up approximately 10.5% of the country’s population, with about 78,500 Indigenous people belonging to nine recognized Nations: Lokono, Warao, Kalina, Akawaio, Arekuna, Patamona, Makushi, Wapichan, and Wai Wai. Most Indigenous communities are located in Guyana’s hinterland and interior regions, particularly in Regions 1, 8, and 9. Guyana is home to approximately 212 Indigenous villages and communities, many of which hold legal land titles covering about 15.6% of the country’s land area.
Indigenous Peoples are the first inhabitants of Guyana, with a history dating back nearly 11,000 years, and continue to play a vital role in protecting the country’s forests, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Indigenous traditions have significantly shaped Guyanese identity through language, food, craft, farming, and environmental stewardship. Many communities continue to sustain their livelihoods through agriculture, fishing, forestry, craft production, eco-tourism, and other community-based economic activities while preserving their rich cultural knowledge for future generations.
